As mentioned on the program, the two anti-spyware tools I use most
often with clients are Spybot Search and Destroy
(http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html) and the beta of Microsoft
Anti-Spyware
(http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/default.mspx). I've
found that the combination of these two tools on workstations identify
and remove most of the spyware threats in the wild.
A couple of notes related to Spybot are worth mentioning:
1. Spybot does not automatically update itself to protect against the
latest spyware threats. You must update the tool manually to make sure
the scan engine is up to date.
2. The real-time spyware protection component of Spybot (teatimer.exe)
has caused some problems with some network tools, especially in a Small
Business Server network. When the Microsoft Anti-spyware tool is
installed on a system and the real-time protection is enabled, the
real-time component of Spybot does not have to be used.
The Microsoft Anti-spyware tool is still in beta, meaning that it has
not been "officially" released, but this program is more stable and
mature than many of Microsoft's other software releases. It is not yet
known if or how Microsoft will license the anti-spyware tool for
commercial users, but the tool is expected to be available for personal
users at no cost.
